While the integrity of the sovereign state remains intact, our increasingly interconnected world is marked with the unprecedented movement of people, goods and capital across national jurisdictions. Consequently, the impact of political conflict, persecution and violence is rarely contained within the confines of the state. Inevitably, the needs of the displaced must be met by a collective global effort. It is within this context that the role of international law, regulating the treatment and determination of refugee status, is heightened.
